Get Up: The First Step Toward Winning Again
The Importance of Being Resilient
Players falling to the ground during football matches is a common sight. This may happen due to a rough push from an opposing player or as a result of an accidental collision. At such moments, the player needs to get up quickly and continue with the game—failing to do so can disrupt the team’s balance and potentially allow the opponent to score.
Let’s set aside the rare cases where a player suffers a serious injury due to the fall—such situations are beyond anyone’s control.
In most other instances, the injury may not be serious, or there may be no injury at all. Yet, the player delays getting up, believing a foul has been committed. Frustrated that the referee hasn’t penalized the opponent, he remains on the ground, expressing his anger instead of rejoining the game. What he may not realize is that a moment of frustration, hesitation, or fear of aggravating minor pain can cost the team a goal or even the match.
Football is a team sport, and when one player displays such emotions, it impacts the entire team. The opponent is quick to capitalize on such moments, gaining control of the game.
A Key Football Training Drill
If you watch the video above, you’ll see a player placing his palm on top of the ball, circling around it a couple of times, then steadying himself and kicking the ball with force. This drill causes the player to feel dizzy due to the circular motion. Despite the dizziness, the player must regain control and deliver a strong kick.
This is the main objective of the session. Coaches use such drills to prepare players for difficult situations, like when they suffer a heavy fall during a match. Thanks to this training, players learn to recover quickly, get back on their feet, and continue playing.
Life is like a Football Match
Now, let’s try to relate this to real life. There are times when we experience a jolt, such as a loss in a business venture, being fired from a job, rejection in an interview, failing an exam, or facing medical issues. In those moments, it can feel as though we’ve been knocked to the ground.
Initially, the shock may keep us down. And even after we regain our senses, we often still refuse to get back up. Instead, we dwell on what happened, complain, blame others, and express our frustration.
Embrace Responsibility, Unlock Solutions
What we often fail to realize is that half the problem is solved the moment we decide to get up. It means we’ve found the courage to face the issue and accept its consequences. Acknowledging failure or loss is the first step toward overcoming any challenge.
It provides clarity, helping us understand what went wrong, what could have been done differently, and how to avoid similar situations in the future. Every pain teaches a lesson, and every lesson shapes us into who we are.
What matters most is not sitting in despair, but choosing to rise and move forward.
